THE SAINTS - (I'm) Stranded 1977

After tasteful pop, followed by a good dose of hardcore/punk I finish postin' for today with the debut record by The Saintsformed in Brisbane 1974 with original members Chris Bailey (vocals, later guitarist), Ed Kuepper (guitars) and Ivor Hay (drums). Info: (I'm) Stranded was released by EMI on 21 February 1977 and their debut 7Inch, "(I'm) Stranded", was issued ahead of the album in September 1976, which Sounds magazine's reviewer, Jonh Ingham, declared was the "Single of this and every week". "Erotic Neurotic" was the second single, which was released in May 1977 and the group relocated to the UK. In June, bass guitarist Alasdair "Algy" Ward replaced Bradshaw and the group issued a single, This Perfect Day in July, which peaked in the Top 40 on the UK Singles Chart. Contemporaneous with Ramones, the group were employing the fast tempos, raucous vocals and "buzz saw" guitar that characterised early punk rock. Kuepper explained that they played faster and faster as they were nervous in front of audiences. According to Australian rock historian, Ian McFarlane, they had developed their "own distinctive sound as defined by Kuepper's frenetic, whirlwind guitar style and Bailey's arrogant snarl".In May 2001, Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) celebrated its 75th anniversary and named "(I'm) Stranded" in its Top 30 Australian songs of all time. In 2007, 'I'm Stranded' was one of the first twenty songs added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry. Their debut album was listed at #20 in the book, 100 best Australian albums, in October 2010. Have a great weekend and I'll go back to bed.

THE VICTIMS - All Loud On The Western Front 1989

Recorded @ Sweet Corn Studios, November '77 - March '78, The Victims were formed in Perth in mid-1977 with James Baker on drums (ex-Beheaded/The Geeks), Dave Flick on guitar + vocals (ex-Beagle Boys) and Rudolph V bass guitar. Earlier in that year Baker and Cardwell had founded another punk band, the Geeks, with Ross Buncle on guitar and a vocalist, Lloyd. That group folded in May and their original songs formed the core of the Victims' initial repertoire. The group's sound was based on United States punk pioneers, the Flamin' Groovies, the Heartbreakers, New York Dolls, and the Stooges. Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, felt that "with their frantic, explosive sound backed by a solid melodic bent, The Victims became the premier punk band on the Perth scene." Their debut single, "Television Addict", was issued in April 1978 and was followed by a five-track extended play, The Victims, in August of that year. The group disbanded early in the next year. In 1989 Timberyard Records released a compilation album, All Loud on the Western Front, of their material. In late 2014 and early 2015 Baker and Faulkner were joined by Ray Ahn (of Hard-Ons) as the Television Addicts to perform the Victims material. The 2014 and '15 shows were so well received that the trio rightly assumed the band name The Victims and played sold out shows at Rosemount Hotel and Mojo's Bar.

WORLD WAR XXIV - No Luck 1995

World War XXXIV are a high energy punk outfit that have been together since early 2013 and are a rehashed version of WWXXIV "one of the best punk bands to come out of Sydney in the early 80's". The current line up comprises local lads from the far north coast of NSW and the original lead singer Mark "Bird" Nowane fronting the band. Bird recalls having seen a flier at a local music store which said "looking for people to jam, punk, no brown eyed girls" (relates to requests for the song!) and thought he must ring. A month later he responded and never looked back. The original World War XXIV formed in the 1980's and were getting into some fast energetic punk music. In 1983 the band did the excellent Azaria/Why Bother single which was one of the best Aussie punk releases of the 80's. The band plays a fast style of punk that combines Dead Kennedys style hardcore, Peter & the Test Tube Babies Oi!sound, and tough Radio Birdman riffs which creates a powerful non generic sound. When asked, Bird recalls that no one could agree on a name, so at the last minute Bird spat out WWXXIV so that the promoters would have a name to go with. "Although we had played a party before under the name of Discharge not knowing until we finished that there was an English punk band with that name already. Everybody agreed on the name (WWXXIV) because it rhymed and perhaps we could change it later if we felt like it", but it stuck like glue. Since the original line up there’s been a couple of changes and many other players have gone through. Bird felt like it wasn't quite right when he reformed the second line up to use the same name but consensus at the time was to go with it. This time around the band decided to stay with the “world war” vein but move forward. Bird says XXX is bit of an eye catcher so WWXXXIV was born. Looking forward to some high energy music, which was lost in the pop punk era; on these both compilatons.
