Sony Xperia Z vs. Samsung Galaxy S3, Is Samsung Sweating?

Sony, the electronic giant mobile company from Japanese, just announced its new android flagship quad-core smartphone at CES this year, the Xperia Z. Coming with a 5-inch 1080p screen, and other powerful specs, it declares that Sony will be hoping this new Android handset can deliver the scalps of high-end rival devices such as Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S3, the world's bestselling smartphone in 2012 and owns a lot of new features.

Has Sony finally crafted a flagship able to go toe-to-toe with the competition of 2012's best? Will Sony Xperia Z successfully defeat Samsung Galaxy S III to be the leader of Android in 2013? Let’s have a look.

Size
Samsung galaxy s3 have a 4.8inch screen, while Xperia Z has a 5inch screen.  The Xperia Z is slightly longer, but roughly the same width. Sony's handset is also notably thinner than the Galaxy s3.

Weight
Due to the Xperia Z has a full pane of glass on both the front and the back, The Xperia Z is slightly heavier than S3, with a weight of 146g. The Galaxy S III's back is plastic, so it only have a weight of 133g.

Display
If you want to enjoy HD videos on your phone, obviously, The Xperia Z is your better choice, which has a 1080p Reality Display with a solution of 1920x1280, 443 pixels per inch (ppi). At the same time, Samsung Galaxy S III only has a solution of 1280×720, 306ppi.

Processor
Sony Xperia Z runs on the 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 Pro quad core processor, while Samsung Galaxy S III gets two different versions: a globally 1.4GHz Samsung’s own Exynos Quad core processor and a 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 dual core processor for US exclusively. For most customers, their performance will be more than adequate.

RAM
Xperia Z features 2GB RAM. The galaxy s3 also gets two different models, 2GB RAM for the North American, 1GB RAM for the international market.

Storage
For Storage, The Xperia Z only comes in one 16 GB version while Samsung galaxy s3 offers its flagship in three different storage options. Although both of the phone supports expand the memories even further with an SD slot, I should say Samsung really win in this aspect.

Network connectivity

Both two devices are supporting 4G LTE network connectivity and HSPA+.

Camera
Both of the two smartphones get super cameras. The Xperia Z gets a 13MP rear camera and a 2.1MP front camera, while the Galaxy S III has an 8MP rear camera and a 1.9MP front camera. Besides, Xperia Z supports HDR shooting. Sony does a good job.

Battery
On paper, the Xperia Z has a battery of 2,330 mAh, slightly higher than Galaxy S III, which have a battery of 2100mAh. But many factors determine battery life, and the Xperia Z powers a display with over two million pixels.

The good news for the Xperia Z is that Sony has developed software called Battery STAMINA mode, which improves standby time by at least 4 times.

Intangibles
Xperia Z waterproof
The Xperia Z is waterproof and dust proof, so your phone is in safe if the phone unfortunate drop into a bathtub or toilet.

The Xperia Z runs Android 4.1 Jellybean, which is a slight disappointment since Android 4.2 is out in the wild. But Sony assures me it intends for the Xperia Z to get upgrades to 4.2 and the next iteration of Android (codenamed Key Lime Pie). Now Samsung have pulled out its 4.1.2 jelly bean update for the galaxy s3.

So which wins?
The Xperia Z actually looks good, and the device is set to arrive by the end of Q1. But Can the smartphone sell as well as the Samsung device? The answer we will reveal in the future. But the mobile phone industry is developing rapidly, rumors now also say that Samsung galaxy s4 might be released this May. Anyway, let us wait to see.
