Ashampoo WinOptimizer consists of a collection of tools that aim to maintain your system and increase its performance.

The user interface is quite friendly. In the Overview section, you can take a look at details of the system, maintenance (auto-start entries, services, unnecessary objects – fixing them is done is a single click), hibernation files, old update backups, but you can also use tuning assistant (it searches for optimization options for your system, based on your preferences) and activate Live-Tuner (so you can monitor CPU and RAM usage).

The modules found in Ashampoo WinOptimizer include system maintenance (one-click optimizer, drive cleaner, registry optimizer, Internet cleaner, defragmenting tool), performance improver (service manager, startup and Internet tuner, process and uninstall manager), Windows customizer (tweaking, antispy, file associations, context menu manager, icon saver), system analyzer (system information, DiskSpace Explorer, system benckmark, Disk Doctor), file tools (file wiper, encrypter, decrypter, splitter, joiner, undeleter), backup manager, and task planner.

As you can see, there are plenty of options to explore. You can create a favorites list, in order to simplify your searches. When an application comes equipped with so many features, it is very difficult for all of them to run perfectly, especially when Ashampoo WinOptimizer seems to use a small amount of system memory.

For instance, the defragmenting tool runs at its full capabilities only if there is enough disk space available. Plus, if you tell the tuning assistant that you don't use Windows' hibernation status, it will still display Hibernation as an optimizing solution. We have also encountered random errors (e.g. "Abstract Error") when moving back and forth in the program.

The bottom line is that Ashampoo WinOptimizer is definitely worth to be taken seriously as a system maintenance tool, but it could use some work.

Overall, this software solution can prove quite useful especially since it is rather easy to use. Nonetheless, there are some shortcomings like the limited support for graphic file formats that may determine some users to look somewhere else.

SuperTux 0.4.0 Milestone 2

Over ten years after the last stable release of SuperTux (0.1.3 released July 2005) the SuperTux team have announced the release of the first stable version in the Milestone 2 series.

Compared to 0.1.3, this release features:

• a nearly completely rewritten game engine based on OpenGL, OpenAL, SDL2, ...
  
• support for translations
  
• in-game manager for downloadable add-ons and translations
  
• Bonus Island III, a for now unfinished Forest Island and the development levels in Incubator Island
  
• a final boss in Icy Island
  
• new and improved soundtracks and sound effects

SuperTux 0.4.0 Overworld

It has been a long road for the project, and a lot has changed as the engine seems to have been largely rewritten to make it suitable for more advanced graphics and scripting. Whilst the existing content has been updated, it would seem that the one area in which the project is short is new tilesets and levels, with only a partially complete 2nd forest overworld of the (originally planned) 7 desired worlds.

That's where the community comes in though. With a stable game to work with, hopefully players and artists can combine to extend the game and make it enjoyable for generations to come.

My own 15 year old son remembers SuperTux 0.1.3 fondly as, he says, the best game he played as a young child.
