Ninite: The Quick and Easy Way to Install Windows Software in Batches [ GUIDE ]

Ninite
When you buy a new computer or re-install Windows there is always one arduous task to face — installing all of the software you use. This means installing the web browser you prefer, making sure that you have virus protection, ensuring a media player is available, and so much more.
Also, new computers are often encumbered with unwanted software (also known as crapware), and don’t come with the tools you really need to get work done.To get rid of the crapware, there’s Decrap. But once that’s gone, you have to install all of the good stuff–and where free utility Ninite that can be used to make the installation process a great deal quicker and simpler that skip toolbars or extra junk during installations!
Forget having to visit website after website in order to download all of the necessary installers. Forget having to spend ages running through the installation of all of the programs you need. These are things that Ninite can take care of for you. But more than this — it will also ensure that your apps are kept up to date.
Unlike most applications, you start using Ninite before you even download it. Just go to Ninite.com and start ticking checkboxes for free applications you want to install on your computer. The catalog is rich, and includes perennial favorites such as Google Chrome and VLC, but also more obscure choices like the NVDA text-to-voice screen reader and WinMerge, a file comparison utility for developers. The service enables you to create your own perfect software installer so all of the apps you choose here can be installed by running a single setup file. Available for Windows & Linux softwares.
Ninite features
  • start working as soon as you run it
  • not bother you with any choices or options
  • install apps in their default location
  • say no to toolbars or extra junk
  • install 64-bit apps on 64-bit machines
  • install apps in your PC’s language or one you choose
  • do all its work in the background
  • install the latest stable version of an app
  • skip up-to-date apps
  • skip any reboot requests from installers
  • use your proxy settings from Internet Explorer
  • download apps from each publisher’s official site
  • verify digital signatures or hashes before running anything
  • work best if you turn off any web filters or firewalls
  • share Ninite installers with friends!
  • save you a lot of time!
NOTE: Ninite installers always install the latest versions of apps regardless of when they were created. This means that after you install some apps with Ninite you can keep the installer .exe around and run it again every now and then to keep those apps updated.
Ninite checks app versions before downloading and installing software. So if you already have the latest version Ninite will just keep moving down your list of apps.
How to use it?
STEP 1:
Pay a visit to the Ninite website, scroll down the page slightly and tick the boxes next to all of the programs you are interested in.In the list you will find everything from office suites and music players to security tools and essential plugins.
STEP 2:
Once you’re done checking all of the boxes for the applications you’d like to install, click the big Get Installer button at the bottom of the page. Your computer will then download a tiny installer, customized according to your software choices. Should you find that the download does not start for you automatically, click the retry the download link.
You might be surprised to discover just how small the compiled installer is. This is because it does not contain setup files for all of the applications you have chosen, but instead makes use of scripts to automatically download and run the latest versions of all of the installers.
STEP 3:
Run it, click “Yes” when Windows asks for Administrative permissions, and go have a cup of coffee (or lunch, depending on your Internet connection and software picks).
STEP 4:
When you come back, all of your software will be installed. It’s that simple: Ninite asks no questions while running, and doesn’t force you to click Next-Next-Next, agree to any EULAs, or to do anything really. All will be done automatically as everything is taken care of for you.
STEP 5:
If you already happen to have some software installed, it does not matter. Ninite will check to see whether you have the very latest version of a program installed, update it if necessary, or just skip it if you are already up to date.
STEP 6:
Once the installer finish installing, it will provide the status of each application installed and an option to re-install application that failed to installed previously if any.

Space Station 13 remake liberated!

Many of us know Space Station 13 as "that awesome game I never played". Along with games like Dorf Fortress it stands as one of the pinnacles of the gameplay philosophy of fun through massive amounts of diversity. Originally developed in one of the most broken and unupdated platforms ever imaginable, BYOND, fans of the game have been trying to develop a standalone remake of the game for a while.

After a long period of development, the team of Robust Games, in charge of the project, decided to liberate the whole thing and turn to open development. This means all of the code is now GPLv3 and all of the art assets are now CC-BY-SA, effectively making the game 100% free-as-in-free-domes.

So what are you waiting for? Get to developin'!

EDIT: Apparently only the placeholder sprites (not the fancy ones in the screenshot) have been released under CC-BY-SA. The game should still be 100% playable with these, though.

Assets License: CC-BY-SA

How To Run Windows Apps On Mac For Free Without VM

WineBottler
WineBottler packages Windows-based programs like browsersmedia-playersgames or business applications snugly into Mac app-bundles.
Your company provides you with a login, mail, calendar and contacts that only work on certain browsers?
You quickly want to test your websites in Windows-based browsers.
You want to play games, that are not ported to OS X?
Your online trading platform or accounting tool only runs on Windows?
Your audio book player is not available on OS X?
No need to install emulators, virtualizers or boot into other operating systems – WineBottler runs your Windows-based programs directly on your Mac.
Instructions
  1. Download the latest stable version of WineBottler from the link below.
  2. Double-click the DMG file and drag both the Wine and WineBottler icons into your Applications folder.
  3. Find your Windows software. (In my case, I will use Microsoft Money Sunset Edition.)
  4. Next, go to Wine Application Database (AppDB) from the link below and type the name of your Windows software into the Search box to find out if other people have successfully installed the app, and what requirements need to be met. (In the case of Microsoft Money, I will need to add two Winetricks, msxml3 and ie8.)
  5. Open WineBottler and switch to the Advanced tab.
  6. Leave “new prefix” selected under “Prefix Template” and click the “Select File…” button to browse to your program’s setup file (in my example, “USMoneyDlxSunset.exe”.) Select “This is an installer, execute it.”
  7. Certain programs require additional Windows components, such as “IE8″ or the “.NET Framework” to run. You can include these in your application’s prefix, so it works properly. (For Microsoft Money, use the Search box to find “msxml3″ and “ie8″, then tick each one.)
  8. Check “Include Wine binaries…” after reading the tip box. Change “com.yourcompany.yourapp” to match your program (For me, that’s “com.Microsoft.Money”.)
  9. Leave “Silent Install” unchecked, then click “Install”.
  10. Choose where to save it, name your program and click “Install”.
  11. First the “Wine bottle” or “prefix” is set up then WineBottler installs any Winetricks, followed by your app. If a“Profile creation aborted” error appears, read the log (Typically it’s related to a missing Winetricks setup file, and you’ll be provided with a download link.)
  12. After resolving errors, you’re prompted to install Winetrick components followed by the program. (If any Program Error boxes appear, keep clicking close until they disappear and WineBottler moves onto the next component.)
  13. Open the program from the Applications folder (There might be a short wait.)
  14. Now try it. (In Microsoft Money, I couldn’t use the setup wizard, so I needed to adapt the “sample.mny” file by choosing “File > Open” and browsing to “drive_c\Program Files\Microsoft Money Plus”.)
  15. You’re done
Screenshots
Note
Before installing any software, visite Wine Application Database (AppDB) and search for your Windows software to see if someone else had already successfully installed it and to see what features worked and what didn’t work.

SEO query string universal solution

universal solution for seo troubles caused by urls with query strings
URLs with query strings can be a real poison for a SEO. The main and mostly harmful damage untreated URLs with string query do, is a not calculable rise of amount of existing URLs with same content, HTTP answer code 200 and untreated indexing management, also called duplicated content. Another issue caused by query strings in URLs is overspending of crawl budget to URLs with query strings, which must be better excluded from crawling and indexing.

On this way a site with untreated URLs with query strings gets on the one side such URLs into index, which don't belong here, on the other side the crawling budget for good URLs could be missed, cause overspend.

There are some passive techniques to deal with query strings in URLs. Actually i planned to publish existing techniques for dealing with query strings in URLs and my solution for SEO problems caused by query strings in URL into my ultimate htaccess SEO tutorial, but then this topic got some more details, so i decided to create an extra article about query strings in URL and SEO.

Preceding kinds of SEO dealing with query strings in URLs

  • while Google means, it could deal with query strings in URLs, it recommends to adjust the bot's settings in Webmaster Tools for each of existing query strings.
  • URLs with query strings could be disallowed in the robots.txt with a rule like
    Disallow: /?*
    Disallow: /*?
  • If header information of HTML or PHP files, available with URLs with query strings, can be edited, so it is possible to add rules for indexing management and URL canonicalisation, like
    <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">
<link href="Current URL, but without query string" rel="canonical">
These methods are mainly manual, require unpredictable workload and solute problems partly. But the good news is: i have an universal solution, working for all URLs with query strings and getting rid of all SEO troubles caused by query strings in URLs.
